Performance

Suspended indirect lighting can cause excessive ceiling brightness which reflects on computer screens, reducing user comfort and productivity. Our furniture mounted units spread light smoothly across the ceiling to eliminate these hot spots. They balance the brightness of the ceiling with the workstation and provide comfortable illumination to surrounding spaces.

When workstation surfaces are brighter than their surrounds, occupants are drawn to their work and distractions are reduced. This helps to direct office speech into sound absorbing partitions, and no recessed lighting means more acoustical ceiling tiles.

Design

Freedom from Clutter

Suspended indirect lighting systems reduce apparent ceiling heights. Furniture mounted lighting eliminates the clutter and increases the distance between the luminaires and the ceiling. This improves brightness ratios and reduces the number of luminaires required.

Our task/ambient units provide downlight (task) and uplight (ambient) from a single luminaire. This eliminates the need for both task lights and ceiling luminaires and results in an unequalled sense of spaciousness.

Freedom of choice

Tambient lighting is designed to integrate with any “open plan” furniture system. This means you can compose and take bids on several different furniture systems knowing that the lighting you’ve chosen will be compatible.

Design Flexibility

With Tambient, even offices with low ceilings can enjoy high quality, indirect lighting. This allows architects to adopt reduced floor-to-floor heights without compromising lighting quality and the feeling of spaciousness.

Workstations can be easily reconfigured and relocated without sacrificing quality – the lighting moves with the furniture. Rearrangements are achieved with less downtime and lowest cost.

Workplace

Balanced luminance ratios, appropriate luminance hierarchies, reduced clutter, and precise glare control contribute to visual comfort and create offices where people prefer to work and feel good about their jobs. This can help retain valued employees.

Tambient lighting provides a refreshing, attractive and distinctive workplace that can help growing organizations recruit new talent.

Cost

Tax Advantages

Furniture integrated luminaires qualify for accelerated depreciation. Owners can write off the entire cost of the lighting system in 7 years (furnishings) instead of 39 (building). Tambient lighting also helps building owners qualify for maximum income tax deductions under the Energy Policy Act of 2005.

Energy Savings

Our furniture mounted lighting saves energy by focusing light where it’s needed. With lighting loads as low as 0.6 watts per square foot, it’s the most energy efficient open office lighting system. Lower lighting loads means lower air conditioning costs, too.

Simplified Installation

Tambient luminaires do not require the services of a licensed electrician - not even a ladder. Needed are floor or furniture-based electrical outlets like those commonly used for powering workstation task lights. (We recommend dedicated outlets controlled by a wall switch.)

Reduced Maintenance

Compared to overhead lighting systems, maintenance costs are low. Fewer luminaires means less relamping. Easy access means no disruption by ladders or scaffolds and safety is increased.

Experience

In 1966, we designed the first furniture-integrated task/ambient system*, and we’ve been manufacturing top quality architectural and task/ambient lighting products** since 1976.

All Tambient products are developed under the direction of veteran lighting designers who have in-depth experience with the design and construction aspects of a project.
